The New Barbizon Exhibition

The exhibition at Tiroche reveals the story of the four members of the New Barbizon Group, that began operating together in 2010. They started as a group of five, Zoya Cherkassky, Anna Lukashevsky, Natalia Zourabova, Olga Kundina and Asia Lukin.

Over the years Asia abandoned the group and they remained four members, who are related to each other, in multiply ways.

This is the story of five artists from the former Soviet Union, who received a rigid academic art education, at the art academies where they studied. Like most immigrant artists who made Alyiah, they experienced cultural and social shock, and thus tried to cope with these experiences through painting. The women of the group called themselves the New Barbizon Group, one of the first Impressionists art groups to paint in nature from observation. They leave the studio and go out to the street where all the action is, sit for hours in city centers, markets and conflict areas: Neve Sha’anan neighborhood in Tel Aviv, the new central station, Rabin Square, Ajami neighborhood in Jaffa, Nitzana neighborhood in Bat Yam, downtown In Haifa, Jerusalem alleys and neighborhoods in Rosh Pina; Peripheral settlements like Rahat and Hura in the Negev, the Bedouin market in Be’er Sheva, the kibbutzim in Baram and Ein Harod in the north; European cities including Moscow and Perm in Russia, Berlin, Leipzig and Düsseldorf in Germany; Paris and London.

Some of their favorite painting subjects include women, portraits, landscapes and nature; And then the unbelievable happens, the art world falls in love with a group that offers the re-examination of the panoramic view of the Israeli reality. The interpretations and questions raised by the paintings of the New Barbizon show the relevance and freshness reflected by the women of the group. There is no doubt that the New Barbizon group has a significant impact, which that brought back the joy of painting to the Israeli art world, each of them is different, but together as a group they revive the direct, authentic, simple and unsophisticated painting.

The group has presented many exhibitions at multiple locations, including: at the Bat Yam Museum of Contemporary Art, at the Negev Museum of Art, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in the city of Perm, at Kibbutz Baram, at the Haifa Museum, Tel Aviv Museum, in 2017, the New Barbizon exhibition – Return to Life, at the Mishkan Museum of Art in Ein Harod, and the exhibition “America” were displayed at the Midrasha Gallery.

The group has been operating for more than 12 years, and each of the group’s members achieved impressive results.

Anna Lukashevsky

b. 1975- Lives in Haifa, these days she is before a solo exhibition at the Haifa Museum of Art. Previously held a solo exhibition “Soviet Haifa” at the Bat Yam Museum and in the exhibition “People you probably know” the New & Bad gallery, Haifa.

Olga Kundina

b. 1965- Divides her time and the studio between Rosh Pina and Tel Aviv, previously exhibited in the solo exhibition “Jerusalem Drawings” the historic Bezalel Building Jerusalem, “There is light at the end of the tunnel“, Rosenfeld Gallery, “Pictures from Rosh Pina” Nora Gallery.

Zoya Cherkassky

b. 1976 – 2020 was the year of Zoya Cherkasky, won the Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art from The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. In addition to winning the prestigious award, her exhibition LOST TIME, which was displayed at the Fort Gansevoort Gallery in New York, was selected as one of the ten best exhibitions for 2020 by the New York Magazine. In 2018, she presented a solo exhibition “Pravda” at the Israel Jerusalem Museum.

Natalia Zourabova

b. 1975- Lives in Tel Aviv, winner of the Discount Art Award for 2019. In 2019, she presented a solo exhibition “Diborecki” at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art. Zorbova won several awards and scholarships, and even presented a selection of exhibitions for which she has received awards: “Small Works” (Manshar Gallery), “Five Facts About Myself” (Iraqi Gallery, Moscow), “Longing for the Lake” at Ben Gurion University and more.
