A MAN HEAD OF THE UPPER CLASS

A MAN HEAD OF THE UPPER CLASS WITH CRANIAL DEFORMATION* Tumaco/ La- Tolita culture, Colombia/Ecuador, 300 B.C. – 200 A.D. Probably used as a whistle. Wearing earrings, and a lip ring. Clay. Wooden stand. 10.5 cm high Provenance: The Collection of Mrs. Obergon, Colombia. * The clay heads, of the Tumaco (Colombia) or La-Tolita (Ecuador) are the result of the beheading ritual practiced by this culture. The use of abstract signs along with realism reveals us their political and reli-gious ideas. The deformation of the shape of the head is a result of a ritual where a stick is attached to the skull from birth. The shape of the head serves as testament for the person’s social and religious rank.
