About: Gideon Rubin

Gideon (Gidi) Rubin, painter, grandson of the painter Reuven Rubin, was born in Israel in 1973. At the beginning of his professional career, he painted in a realist style, and according to him, after the twin disaster, 9/11, when he was in New York, he changed his path. He explains, "The changes in my painting were beyond my ability to decide. Obviously, there was trauma and I understood what change is - I just can't paint in the same way." Rubin draws faceless figures, the facial features are always blurred or crossed out and it seems that an opaque mask is worn over them. This choice evokes a feeling of unease, raises the question of why, and leads to several possible answers. The facelessness annihilates the possibility of associating the drawn character with a specific person, erasing the very existence of an identity. This gesture detracts from the mesmerizing realistic fullness of the painting and creates a disturbing tension. Despite this, the characters in the works still evoke familiar feelings in us.

Rubin has a bachelor's degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and a master's degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Today Robin lives in London and is represented by four galleries worldwide, one of which is Karsten Greve in Paris, which is considered one of the most prominent in Europe, and represents important artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Jean DuBois. He presented a large number of solo exhibitions, the latest of which is "Substance to Shadows" at Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles (2023), and participates in quite a few group exhibitions, including: 'Living Memory: Louise Bourgeois, Nicolas Godin & Gideon Rubin', at All Saint's Chapel, London (2023).  His works are in Israeli collections, such as the Dubi Schiff collection, and international collections including Museum Voorlinden Collection, The Netherlands, McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, San Francisco; The Zabludowicz Collection, London and more.
